These Nigerian Women Share Their Perspectives on Life After Getting Married

By The LSV Team · May 15, 2025

Without a doubt, there are many misconceptions about marriage. Some of these are partly because no two marriages are the same, what is a normal occurrence for couple A might be strange for couple B so the best conclusion is that you have to be in it to understand it.

LSV spoke to 3 married women to talk about some of the things they found to be different only after getting married. Read their responses.

"I thought cooking and eating would get easier. As a single girl, I would always worry about what and when to eat, it was a daily struggle and I always told myself and others that when I get married, I will have a food timetable in my kitchen and adhere strictly to it. Guess what, it's even tougher now because I am always thinking of making every meal special for my husband and when I ask what he wants to eat, he tells me to make anything. I love when he eats and thanks me for how delicious the meal was. Older friends tell me it's because we are newlyweds and things will change soon but I don't think so"

– Ade, Lagos

"Before getting married, I heard so many stories about couples finally seeing each other's true colours but I didn't think about it much when I was dating my husband because the only time we didn't spend together during our courtship is when we couldn't be together. I can write a full book on him so that must mean I know almost everything about him right? My husband didn't even let us get back from our honeymoon before dropping little bombshells on me, honestly, they are not even so bad and some are good surprises but I just want you to know that there are a lot of things to learn in a marriage that you won't know while courting. I am sure if you ask him, he will have a lot to say about me too"

– Bunmi, Ibadan

"You know what they say about being your mother's daughter is very true, now that I am married and have my own family I see a lot of my mother in myself with the way I relate with my husband and my son. I feel closer to my mother now because I now understand her better and trust me I wouldn't have believed it as a single girl. I try to do better than her every day and at the same time be more like her. There is a lot that is different after marriage, your focus and perspective change and that alone makes you grow and that can make someone looking from the outside think you have changed. Not everything has to be bad, in fact, there are a lot of mind-blowing experiences you will have if you have a partner who loves you and is in sync with you."

– Vivian, Lagos
