Ife and Seun are your couple's couple and they have been married for two years; they seem to have this marriage thing on lockdown, so we decided to get some insight on how they are figuring it out.
How did you meet?
Seun: Out of the blue, a mutual friend called me on the phone and said, "Seun, I've found you a wife, o." I was ready to settle down and was looking for a serious relationship. I sent the first message, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Ife: I met Seun through someone we both knew.
What is the most romantic gesture Seun has done?
Ife: Seun is a very romantic person. Not to mention the several breakfasts in bed, all expenses paid trips and the heights of thoughtfulness amongst several other things. On an occasion, Seun had taken my makeup bag to a Mac store and told the employees to fill the bag with every item I didn't have. I didn't realize this until I got home from one of my work trips.
I guess the one that sticks out for me is when I began a business and on the first day, I was sad because no one was patronizing me. Seun saw this and secretly paid several people to come and patronize me. I was so thrilled that I began getting orders, and I had no idea Seun had hired people to come and patronize me simply to make me happy. I didn't realize this till years later.
What was the relationship progression?
Seun: We started as friends for about a month, and we dated for another 18 months before marriage.
What is the most romantic gesture Ife has done?
Seun: One of my love languages is receiving gifts, it's literally one of my mumu buttons. Ife is always thoughtful when she gifts me. One of such times, I had a need for a pricey item, and I had decided to get it at a later time because we had multiple pending projects. She went out of her way like she always does to save her money to get this item.
The best marriage advice you received?
Ife: God should be your third party in a marriage
Seun: True friendship is the basis of long-lasting relationships.
How do you resolve misunderstandings?
Ife: As for me, I pray about it, and if I am prompted to apologize, I do so whether I was wrong or not; otherwise, I wait for him to do so.
What do you love most about your husband?
Ife: He is so thoughtful (I don't have to say I need something he knows already), super caring, sweet, romantic, and everything more.
What do you love most about your wife?
Seun: She is my happy place, where I find peace & care in this over-demanding world. Her calm demeanour, courtesies, cheerleading, and kindness are everything to me.
When and how did you know she was the one?
Seun: Knowing she was the one started with not being able to imagine life without her. She was & is not only supportive, but she was & is also willing to work to make your relationship better. She is a partner in more than the usual sense.
Did you have any expectations of marriage that differs from the current reality? How so?
Ife: Yes, I had some expectations. There is more negative coverage of marriages in the media which makes it look scary. Even though I had preconceived notions about how hard marriage would be (especially with juggling daily chores and having a great career), I can now confidently say that it is one of the most beautiful things in the world because of the immense support I get from my husband. It truly takes two to tango.
What advice will you give a couple that just got married?
Ife: The best advice is both parties have to realize they came from different backgrounds and with different training.. so, you have to be patient with each other
Seun: Be Willing to Grow and Learn. Everyone screws up, says dumb things, and gets stuff wrong. How people react defines a relationship.
